Tropical butterfly house

Summer is the right time to learn, get to know and discover! Next to the Rundāle Palace, the tropical butterfly house opens its doors!

In the butterfly house, which is located in front of the garden of Rundāle Palace, it will be possible to see the magnificent inhabitants of the humid tropical forests on both sides of the equator - butterflies.

The Butterfly House offers you to get to know more than 15 different species of tropical butterflies in one place. A visitor favorite will undoubtedly be the blue morphid, which has traveled from faraway Costa Rica. The blue morph is one of the most gorgeous butterfly species in the world. The wings of these butterflies are covered with transparent scales, which turn a metallic blue color when they reflect the sun's rays. The Atlas giant butterfly, on the other hand, can boast a wingspan of 16 cm to 32 cm. Its lifespan is only 10 days because the butterfly doesn't absorb new energy by eating - it just doesn't have a mouth. The other butterflies live up to a month, feeding on fruit juice and nectar from various flowers. The beautiful Indian leaf butterfly is a master of camouflage, and the clipper can develop a flight speed of up to 20-40 km/h.

Regardless of the weather, visitors to the butterfly house will always be greeted by a colorful, warm and beautiful tropical summer. The air temperature, in accordance with the natural habitat of butterflies, is maintained at around 25 to 30 degrees, the air humidity can reach up to 90%.

In the exhibition space, a special incubator is available for visitors to view, where you can observe the miraculous process of transformation - the hatching of butterflies from pupae.

Butterflies should be observed with your eyes, without taking them in your hand or palm. If they want, then they themselves descend on the visitors!
