Court of the Muses: Duchess Dorothea of Courland’s Salon at Löbichau Palace in Ernst Welker’s Caricatures

Anna Charlotte Dorothea von Medem, born in Mežotne and later known as Duchess Dorothea of Courland, was one of the most remarkable personalities in the social and cultural life of Europe during her era. Her salon at Löbichau Palace in Thuringia became known as the “Court of the Muses” — a gathering place for intellectuals, artists, politicians, and rulers from across Europe.

In 1819 and 1820, the Austrian artist and graphic illustrator Ernst Welker stayed at the Court of the Muses, creating witty caricatures portraying the salon’s guests and highlighting their most distinctive traits.
