28. April, 2024
You are invited to the Bauska Castle to enjoy the sound of the 17th century musical instrument, the double virginal, for free. The music that was played and listened to in the 17th century in the largest European metropolises - London and Amsterdam - will be performed by the head and lecturer of the Ancient Music Department of Jāzeps Vītolas Latvian Academy of Music (JVLMA), harpsichordist Ieva Saliete, and students of the JVLMA harpsichord class. The concert will feature music created specifically for the virginal by English composers William Byrd, John Bull, Peter Phillips, John Mandeis, as well as Flemish composer Jan Pietersen Svelink.
The double virginal of Bauska Castle is a copy of a historical musical instrument, and a unique and admirable musical instrument on the scale of the Baltic countries. It was made for the Bauska Castle by the master Christian Fuchs from Frankfurt, Germany, based on the model of the instrument created by the Flemish master Jan Rucker in 1623. The original is kept in the Museum of the Land of Württemberg in Stuttgart.
The concert will take place within the framework of the annual JVLMA students' creative residency at Bauska Palace, which this year will be held on 27-28nd of April.
You are invited to join the group of listeners in order to get a deeper idea of the culture of the time of the existence of Bauska Castle!
