In 1567, Duke Gothard Ketler of Courland issued an order to build a church on the land of the Mazbārbele estate.
The current Bārbele Evangelical Lutheran Church was built in 1789 and rebuilt in 1822. The church's companion, the parsonage, was built at the same time as the church. Both buildings have burned down and been rebuilt several times. In 1993, the church began its renaissance.
The altar painting "Christ on the Cross" was painted in 1872 by Berlin artist Carl Friedrich Gustav Loeillot de Mars. Mārtiņš Odiņš, who was a delegate at the coronation of Emperor Alexander II in 1855 and was crushed in the crowd, is buried in the church cemetery.
The church continued to function during the Soviet occupation.
The Bārbele Evangelical Lutheran congregation is active in the church.
Services are held on the second and fourth Sunday of each month at 2:00 p.m.
