Description

Mežotne Palace is a classical manor house in a beautiful Semigalian landscape - on the right bank of the Lielupe River. The construction of the palace began in 1797, designed by the Italian architect Giacomo Quarengi and led by the German architect Johann Georg Adam Berlitz. Construction was completed in 1802 and the interior decoration work continued until 1817.

Historically, Mežotne Palace was the property of the Princely von Lieven family until 1920. It is one of the most important classical buildings in Latvia, and was once surrounded by an English-style park.

Opposite Mežotne Palace, on the left bank of the Lielupe River, is located the hillford of Mežotne, one of the largest fortifications of the ancient Semigallians of the 9th-13th centuries. At the beginning of the summer season, a pedestrian bridge is built across the Lielupe River, connecting the palace with the hillford.
